What Is Hardie Board? Functional And Attractive Siding

The siding you use for your home has a significant impact on both the look and functionality of the house. Historically, wood products have been used as the outer shell of homes. Beginning in the 1950s, vinyl siding began to increase in popularity because it improved upon wood siding in terms of its functionality.
Hardie board was introduced to the construction industry in the 1980s as a significant improvement to both wood and vinyl siding. Hardie board gets its name from the James Hardie Company, which invented Hardie board specifically to address functionality and cost issues associated with other types of siding.
Hardie board, also referred to as fiber cement, brings to homes the visual appeal of wood. Still, it has superior functional properties to wood, including its durability and low maintenance requirements.
Hardie board doesn’t rot, which is a significant limitation of wood, and it is also secure against insect damage. Hardie board is also very durable, designed to last for as long as 50 years without needing to be replaced.
Compared to vinyl and metal, Hardie board is much more visually appealing. It gives a home the visual appeal of traditional wood without all of the vulnerabilities of pine, cedar, cypress, and other types of natural wood siding.

What is Hardie Board Made of?

Hardie board is a siding material made out of fiber cement material. Silica sand particles are ground to a fine powder, then liquified. The liquified sand is combined with wood pulp to provide a bending strength property to the sand so that the Hardie board product can be formed without cracking. Adding wood pulp makes the fiber cement material more pliable.

The sand and wood pulp mixture is combined with cement and other additives to create a film with ingredients that will then be molded into sheets that are passed through a roller system to create the finished Hardie board product.

Hardie Board Installation

There are several reasons to use Hardie board for building a new home or re-siding an existing home, including that Hardie board provides value during its long lifetime. Hardie Board will save you money over alternatives like wood because it is resistant to pests. Besides, it costs less than wood, which tends to have unpredictable price swings because of the limitations of harvesting wood.

Prior to installation, Hardie Board should be stored flat and kept in a dry area to prevent shrinkage at the butt joints.

Hardie Board is normally installed onto wood or metal (steel) studs spaced a maximum of 24 inches on center and can also be installed directly over the top of OSB sheathing. In rarer cases, Hardie Board can also be installed over top of gypsum, foam, and other surfaces that don’t allow for nailing.

Installation of Hardie Board needs to be done in keeping with local building standards, which specify how to approach joint flashing, caulking, and other aspects of ensuring that moisture cannot penetrate the Hardie Board siding.
